What is Raw Manuka Honey?

Manuka honey is unique in the fact that it comes from bees that pollinate the flowers on the Manuka bush, Leptospermum Scoparium. It's an indigenous plant to specific regions of New Zealand, but it can also be found in Australia. Other species of the bush do in fact grow all over the world but they do not produce the flowers needed to create the nectar that the bees need to make the honey.

Because the origins of the name Manuka are Maori, it's often said that 'real' Manuka honey only comes from New Zealand. Genuine Manuka honey will be almost entirely made from Manuka bush nectar. To be labelled as Manuka honey the honey must be proven to be genuine through testing. Just Bee Manuka Honey has been independently tested and certified and also graded Monofloral Manuka honey by New Zealand Government Export standards.

Is Manuka Honey good for you?

MGO or Methylglyoxal is the compound that is found in high levels in Manuka honey. It is formed naturally in the flowers' nectar and has excellent anti-bacterial properties. Research into the benefits of Manuka honey have been lead by Dr Peter Molan who has many papers detailing the health benefits of this fantastic natural product.

Manuka honey can be beneficial to your mouth, throat and stomach, as well as providing essential amino acids and vital vitamins and minerals. Like all honey it's said to be effective at fighting off infection but the high levels of Methylglyoxal found in Manuka honey are not found in any other honey and they are key to its potent antibacterial and antimicrobial properties.

Manuka honey also has very high levels of anti-oxidants that fight free-radicals in your body, free-radicals have been linked to multiple illnesses, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. With all these benefits you can be in no doubt that Manuka honey is very good for you.

Why is Manuka Honey so expensive?

It's an unfortunate fact that Manuka honey isn't an inexpensive product. Compared to other types of honey there are extra costs in almost every step of the process from the honey being made to Just Bee Honey offering it to you. From the various import costs in bringing the honey to the UK from the other side of the world, to the costs of testing its authenticity and the scarcity of the product itself.

Monoflora honey always comes at a premium, compared to multiflora, it could be comparable to the difference in price between a bottle of inexpensive blended Scotch whiskey and a premium single malt.

Not only is it a more expensive product, it must be tested and proven to be what it claims to be. At Just Bee Honey we will always keep our Manuka honey as competitively priced as we are able to and offer multi-packs for further savings.

How to take Manuka honey?

One of the easiest ways of using Manuka honey for a cough or sore throat is to just stir a teaspoon into a mug of hot water or tea. It's a very traditional and effective remedy and you'll get all the anti-bacterial properties of the honey along with a delicious sweet and soothing drink. If you'd rather you even can sip your Manuka honey right off the spoon. You will feel the honey melt away on your tongue and get to work on soothing your mouth and throat, it can be quite a magical experience!

In the summer you might like to try a teaspoon in a fruit smoothie, the rich taste of Manuka honey is fantastic with many fruits and it will sweeten some of the sharper berries naturally and effectively. A favourite treat of ours is a spoonful drizzled over some rich vanilla ice cream and a handful of plump blueberries.

Manuka Honey's soothing and anti-bacterial properties can also be taken advantage of externally too and you can apply it directly to your skin. It can be used on dry or problematic skin patches, sore spots or just as a general skin moisturiser. For these reasons it's often used as one of the ingredients in DIY natural face masks, just try not to lick it off your own face before it's done its work!

It should go without saying that Manuka Honey can be used as you would use any honey. It's rich and unique flavour lends itself perfectly to be drizzled on your hot porridge or some natural yoghurt. The danger here is that once you've tasted its decadent flavour, you might not want to go back to using any other honey!
