Honey BETTER than antibiotics – says new Oxford research
Did your dear old gran give you honey as a natural remedy when you were feeling under the weather as a child? Mine did. And I still use it today.
Whether it’s a sore throat, a cough or a cold, honey is one of those ingredients many people turn to first. As well as soothing ailments, it also has a warming and calming effect when we need it most.
But honey has always been the underdog compared to the 'superior' medicines doctors and pharmacies kept dishing out.
NOT ANYMORE! The clever scientists at Oxford University have released new research which confirms that honey is officially better at treating coughs and colds than antibiotics and other medicines...
Data analysis of 14 clinical trials, involving 1,761 participants indicated that honey was more effective than usual care for improving symptoms of Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) – I.e. coughs and colds which affect the nose, throat, voice box and the large air passages (bronchi) that lead from the windpipe to the lungs.

The research found that honey was especially effective when it comes to the frequency and severity of coughing. In fact, two of the studies showed symptoms lasted one to two days less among those treated with honey.
The Oxford University scientists and authors of the new research said:
“Upper respiratory tract infections are the most frequent reason for antibiotic prescription. Since the majority of URTIs are viral, antibiotic prescription is both ineffective and inappropriate.”
“When clinicians wish to prescribe for URTI, we would recommend honey as an alternative to antibiotics.”
“Honey is more effective and less harmful than usual care alternatives and avoids causing harm through antimicrobial resistance.”
Thanks gran, you always did know best!
OK, well that's it for this time. I hope you're having a nice August and potentially even some time off/away. After the last few months, I think we all need it! Let's hope that decent weather comes back too! ☀️
