Sweet Chilli Honey Prawns

Our delicious Asian style honey and chilli prawns are easy to make and also nice and quick to prepare and cook. They are best served with noodles or rice and make a fantastic meal that's better than most takeaway options. They have quite a kick from the hot Sriracha sauce, so if you fancy something milder feel free to use a less potent hot sauce. You can use fresh prawns if you have access to them but you can buy some really good frozen prawns these days even from the 'bargain' supermarkets. Aldi has some great 'Raw Peeled Argentinian Prawns' in the frozen section that are perfect for this recipe and very cost effective. This recipe will be enough for two adults as a main meal or four people as a smaller starter or side dish.

To Make Sweet Chilli Honey Prawns you will need:

250g of Raw Frozen Prawns

For the Sauce:

1 tsp Sesame Oil
1 tsp Light Soy Sauce
½ tsp Chopped Ginger (from a tube or fresh)
1 tsp Chopped Garlic (from a tube or fresh)
¼ tsp Chilli Flakes
2 tbsp Just Bee Honey
1 tbsp Hot Sriracha Sauce
70ml of Water

Optional toppings:

1 Red Chilli Pepper (finely chopped)
1 Spring Onion (chopped)
2 tsp Sesame Seeds
Medium sized frying pan
Small mixing bowl

Plus a little oil for frying!

Step One: Prepare the Prawns

If you are using ready to go raw frozen prawns as I do, you just have to make sure you have defrosted them in the bottom of the fridge for 24 hours (or as stated on the package). Then once removed from the bag just lightly pat them with some kitchen paper to make sure they are nice and dry.

Step Two: Make the Sauce

Add all the sauce ingredients to a small bowl and mix together using a fork, easy!

Step Three: Part Cook the Prawns

Add around a tablespoon of vegetable or sunflower oil to the frying pan and warm over a medium heat until the pan is nice and hot, then add the prawns and cook for around 1 ½ minutes on each side. Then remove them from the frying pan and put them on a clean bit of kitchen paper for a moment. It's important not to over cook them or they can turn a bit rubbery instead of nice and juicy!

Step Four: Add the Sauce to the Pan

Add the sauce from the bowl to the frying pan and allow it to bubble away for a couple of minutes. Use a silicon spatula if you have one to make sure you get all the sauce out of the bowl!

Step Five: Add the Prawn back in

The sauce should be starting to thicken, so add the prawns back in and give them a good toss around until they are covered in all that amazing sticky sweet chilli sauce, then turn down the heat a little and let them simmer for a couple of minutes more to fully cook though. Then remove from the heat and serve immediately while they are still hot.

Finish the dish off by scattering some sesame seeds, spring onion and some slices of fresh chilli over the top! If there's enough chilli heat already in the meal for you, try some thin slices of sweet red pepper instead!

The prawns will only take around 10 minutes in total to make, so if you are cooking rice or noodles that take longer make sure to get those on first!
