Honey Ginger Tofu and Rice
Tofu has been a staple in Asian diets for centuries. It originates from China where it has been an essential source of protein. Historically used both for its nutritional value and versatility, tofu is capable of absorbing the rich flavours it’s paired with, making it a favourite in diverse culinary applications.
Our Honey Ginger Tofu recipe is all about celebrating this traditional ingredient by infusing it with honey. You can use any Just Bee honey, however we recommend Just Bee Lemon and Ginger Honey paired with fresh ginger, and garlic. This combination will elevate the neutral taste of tofu with warm spices and sweetness, perfect for a healthful and flavourful meal.
To Make The Honey Ginger Tofu You Will Need:
• 400g firm tofu, pressed and cubed
• 2 tablespoons soy sauce
• 4 tablespoons Just Bee Lemon and Ginger Honey
• 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 tablespoon sesame oil
• 2 teaspoons cornstarch
• 1 tablespoon water
• Fresh greens (such as spring onions or coriander) for garnish
• Sesame seeds for garnish
To Make The Rice You Will Need:
• 1 cup jasmine or basmati rice
• 2 cups water
• Pinch of salt
Serves 2 people
Method:
• In a bowl, combine soy sauce, Just Bee Honey, ginger, garlic and mix well.
• Add the tofu cubes to the marinade, gently toss to coat, and let sit for at least 30 minutes, ideally longer, to absorb the flavours.
• Heat sesame oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the marinated tofu, reserving the excess marinade. Fry until all sides are golden brown and crispy for approximately 5-7 minutes.
• While the tofu cooks, mix cornstarch with water to create a slurry.
• Pour the reserved marinade into the pan and bring to a simmer. Add the cornstarch slurry, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy. Ensure all tofu pieces are nicely coated.
• Sprinkle with sesame seeds and fresh greens.
• Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.
• In a saucepan, bring water to a boil. Add the rinsed rice and salt, stir once.
• Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes, or until water is absorbed and rice is tender.
• Remove from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork.
Drain of any access water from the pan and serve the freshly cooked rice with a generous side of your Honey Ginger Tofu.
Feel free to drizzle any extra sauce left in the pan onto your plate too for an extra burst of flavour.
